Portrait and Studio Photography: Blog 1

Question: Look through assorted media, magazines, internet and collect four portrait pictures. The environment should be a key feature in two or four images. Describe the subject's character in each of the images. What can you see within each image leads you to these conclusions about the subject's character.

Answer:

For this first image, the subject appears wide-eyed and innocent. The greens, yellows and browns of environment, though blurred out, help the subject appear more astounding. The soft gold that filters over the image helps to enhance the aspect of the picture. I came to the these conclusions about the subjects character because the golden light seems to make a halo around her head and weather it is the makeup that she is wearing or the enhancement of the photographer, her eyes appear to be very big.

In this wedding photograph, the background plays a very big role. The subject's skin tone is pale, so the pale background helps add to the appeal. If the photograph was taken on a darker background, it would enhance the clammy nature of her skin but there is a soft glow to this image that helps appeal to the picture. Though the background is a soft lighting, the harder, darker edges of her dress make the picture that more appealing.

This image taken by Kami Friday was taken during the "Golden Hour", something that I lately have been looking into. The soft golden glow behind her head helps to enhance her features as well as add a playful nature to this photograph. The subject is young and with the green grass backdrop it adds even more youth and vigor to the image. Overall, this image makes me feel happy in a quire sort of way and brings a smile to my face seeing the models joy.

This image was also taken by Kami Friday of the same model in the golden hour. I really enjoyed the appeal of this portrait for several reasons. This shot was taken through a slew of branches, as one can see through the leaves that are out of focus on the front of the camera. The model in this picture looks a tad more serious but at the same time still looks happy. The golden light that is filtering through the back helps to add appeal to the image as well. The tree that she is leaning on is a key aspect in the picture, for I believe without it the photo would appear very  bland.
