Evaluation: Bubbles

1. In a few sentences, explain what your motivation was for the images you created.

I've always wanted to do a photo shoot involving bubbles. They move and pop really quickly so its hard to take a photograph of them. I chose to add some still life into the images in order to make them more interesting and to add a focus point of the images.

2. In a bullet list, what, if any, problems did you encounter during the assignment and explain why you think the problem occurred?

  • Shutter speed
  • Taking photographs of the bubbles before they popped and making them look as clear as possible
  • Focusing on the flowers clear enough to make them interesting
  • I believe the problem occurred because bubbles in general are really hard to shoot; which is why I chose to shoot them.
  • I also think I had problems because the back light that i was using was really  dark and made it harder to see the bubbles

3. In a paragraph, indicate why did you choose the images(s) that you turned in? Give compositional, subject matter and technical explanations.

I chose these images because I enjoyed the shallow depth of field on the images and how the light reflects off of the light tree. To me they showed a very interesting point of view, of bubbles almost popping and my fingernail touching them. I love the images and am proud of what I did because of how difficult it was to capture these images. I love the way the light reflects off of the bubbles and how the colors reflect off of them.

4.In a paragraph answer the following question. If you had to do this assignment again, what would you do differently and why.

If I had to do this assignee differently, I'd do more research to find out how to capture bubbles popping. That is the image that I was initially going for. I like the images that I have but feel I could have done a better job by doing more research.

Evaluation: Framming

1. In a few sentences, explain what your motivation was for the images you created

I wanted to use the studio to create images that were more focused on portraits. There are a lot of things that you can do with people in terms of framing and the fun that you can have with jel lights! I used some light painting to create a more dynamic image. I normally don't take pictures of  guys so this was an interesting way to go about taking my pictures.

2. In a bullet list, what, if any, problems did you encounter during the assignment and explain why you think the problem occurred?

  • Camera shake
  • Focusing
  • I believe these problems occurred because light painting with people is always a tricky thing, especially when having them hold up an object completely still for more than a few seconds.
  • I also encountered the problem of having too much lighting on one side of my model's face and shadows being to long on other areas.

3. In a paragraph, indicate why did you choose the images(s) that you turned in? Give compositional, subject matter and technical explanations.

I chose these images because I enjoyed the way they came out in the end. Each have an original quality and a lot of them use shallow depth of field. For the first image I wanted to create a cliche image that appealed to everyone. With the images that used an actual frame; I've always seem these types of images be done but I've never done any myself so I was excited to see how this came out.

4. In a paragraph answer the following question. If you had to do this assignment again, what would you do differently and why

If I had to do this assignment again, I'd choose to generate some more images that are of more variety. I love the pictures that I took but I also thing that I could have created better images. I wish I could have created pictures that use natural framing as well.

Evaluation: Landscape

  1. In a few sentences, explain what your motivation was for the images you created
I wanted to create images that were appealing to the audience and me. I love vibrant colors and and HDR images. I also wanted to create images that told a story.

2.In a bullet list, what, if any, problems did you encounter during the assignment and explain why you think the problem occurred?

  • I encountered the problem of exposure with some pictures and the glare of light
  • I also had problems with editing the horizon lines on the panoramic
  • I believe these problems occurred because I couldn't find a way to edit the exposure to the way I wanted it.

3.In a paragraph, indicate why did you choose the images(s) that you turned in? Give compositional, subject matter and technical explanations.

I chose these images because they are very appealing to me in many aspects. I enjoy the HDR picture of the stairs because I feel like it has an emphasis on leading lines and it the eye is drawn to the top where the arch is. I love the contrast images and the vibrant colors that are present. For the Surgeon's Bead and Breakfast sign, I enjoy the rule of thirds aspect that the pictures holds and the reds, greens and blues that shine in the picture. The panoramic pictures were taken off of Airport road after a long hike. I love how you can see the extent of the canyon in both, and the road that travels an unknown place in the distance.

4. In a paragraph answer the following question. If you had to do this assignment again, what would you do differently and why.

If I had to do this assignment again, I would choose to create take pictures of more things for HDR and get more panoramic pictures of Airport Road. I would also choose to take more pictures of the city of Jerome to create a more dynamic view of panoramic images.

Evaluation: Light Painting

1. In a few sentences, explain what your motivation was for the images you created.

Light painting utilizing people is always extremely difficult. My motivation for these pictures were to use a model to create capturing images that were interesting and fun to look at. I could do still life and make thing easier, as I did in the bottom photographs, but I chose to use a model because I wanted to challenge myself. I struggled with highlighting the correct parts of his face and what wold accent him and make him look stronger and with a more defined jaw line. The photograph below this was very hard to capture but it one of my favorite ones that I took during this shoot. I love the way these images came out and its something I want to try again.

2. In a bullet list, what, if any problems did you encounter during the assignment and explain why you think the problem occurred?

  • I encountered the problems of camera shake, especially in the photography depicting the hand. It was hard for him to keep his hand still for so long, even though he was able to sit and stand very still. I think this problem occurred because we are human and holding anything in place for a set period of time is hard to do with out moving a little bit.

  •  I also encountered the problem of choosing what exactly to do with the light. To overcome these problems I used a camera-shake reduction in Photoshop and just messed around with  painting his face and hair.

3.In a paragraph, indicate why did you choose the images(s) that you turned in? Give compositional, subject matter and technical explanations.

These are the images that I turned in because I believe that they most accurately display my love and skill for light painting. It is one of my favorite things to do, but it is also one of the hardest things. I believe these images emphasis a centered image in every photograph and each holds a mystical, almost dark feeling. The image where he looks like he has angel wings; that was not intended at all. I was messing around with the light and trying to highlight the lightbulb, going for the cliche 'light up idea' photograph but when I looked at the camera this had come out. I love the emphasis of the highlights under his chin and along his left eye, making the picture look deeper. The still life pictures were interesting to me as well and I really like the way that they came out. I enjoy the contrast in every image.

4. In a paragraph answer the following question. If you had to do this assignment again, what would you do differently and why

If I had to do this assignment differently, I would use gel lights to create a colored effect on the "wings" to make it appeal more to the audience. This picture is one of my favorites, but I believe that there are things that I could have done to make it appeal more to the audience. I would also used a variation of models in order to create more a dynamic appeal. The still life light painting, though I like it, I would have preferred to make the light in the background a little less bright to make more of an emphasis on the bottles.
